☀️#FAHM Kulintang Music in California 🌟

🤘🏽Have you heard of the scene and spread of indigenous heavy metal music in California ignited by the o.g. kulintang master Danny Kalanduyan who immigrated to the U.S. from Mindanao, Southern Philippines?

In the U.S. you might be lucky to hear, know about world music and indigenous gongs such as Gamelan from Indonesia, but Kulintang Music from Philippines is not as well known.. But thanks to the dedicated work of Guru Danny Kalanduyan in communities from LA to the Bay to even San Diego ..kulintang gong music has now taken root and grown in California.

For this FilAm History Month Ginto Seeds honors the history and legacy of the legend who widely shared, taught, propagated, and cultivated traditional kulintang music in California– GURU DANNY KALANDUYAN. We have had the honor to experience and learn kulintang music directly from Guru Dan and his descendents. With his influence, for over a decade we have played and collaborated with many groups and Kapwa to celebrate, share and spread kulintang music within our communities and the world at large.

This Ginto Seeds creation by Nicanor– KULINTANG Kapit Kamay Putong Bandana- is an homage to all the Kulintang Teachers, Elders and Kapwa that have taught us and inspired us in our journey.

🌟Special Thanks to all our Teachers, Elders, Gongsters, fellow Kulintanger Crews, and Kapwa we have learned and collaborated in our Kulintang Journey:

☀️About Guru Danny Kalanduyan from https://ethnomusicologyreview.ucla.edu/content/music-alive-archive-exploration-kulintang-music-danongan-kalanduyan-collection☀️

Danongan “Danny” Kalanduyan (1 May 1947 – 28 September 2016) taught kulintang, an indigenous gong-drum ensemble from the Philippines for forty years. He was born and raised in the fishing village of Datu Piang, the artistic center of the Maguindanao people on the island of Mindanao, Southern Philippines. In his youth, he won competitions on the gandingan (set of four large hanging gongs), attended Mindanao State University–Marawi, and toured the Far East with the Darangen Cultural Troupe. In 1976, Kalanduyan came to the U.S. as an artist-in-residence at the University of Washington in Seattle under a Rockefeller Foundation grant and graduated with a Master of Arts in ethnomusicology in 1984. He became the first artist of Filipino descent to be awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1995. From 2003 to 2009, Kalanduyan was an artist-in-residence at San Francisco State University while directing and performing internationally with his group, the Palabuniyan Kulintang Ensemble. In 2009, the United States Artists Organization awarded him a Broad Fellow to recognize the caliber and impact of his work. Kalanduyan has taught and performed with nearly every kulintang ensemble in the United States including the Mindanao Kulintang Ensemble, World Kulintang Ensemble, and the Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble. Without Kalanduyan, this pre-colonial musical ensemble would not have been available or known to most in the United States.

☀️About KULINTANG KAPIT KAMAY BANDANA PUTONG☀️

This Kulintang Gong are embedded with the patterns of "KAPIT KAMAY"

With the intention to honor generations of gong culture from the past and the now.

Respects to those who dedicate their lives to continue this tradition.

What is Putong / Pudong?

A Putong is a traditional headdress/head wrapper from the 16th century pre colonial Philippines.

It was typically a cloth wrapped around the head and served both practical and status signaling functions.

The Putong was often used as a marker of social rank, with Datus (chiefs) and nobles wearing more elaborate versions, sometimes adorned with feathers, gold, or other valuable materials.

This Putong is adaptable and can be use in so many different ways to wrap your head or care for your sacred objects.

Ang pag tali ng Putong sa ulo para sa pang spiritual na dahilan.
